What is CMS anyways?

Before I start talking about the awesome software Saltmedia uses to power our websites I wanted to give you a bit of knowledge about website software in general. A CMS (Content Management System) is a software application that allows non-programmers to manage and maintain websites with a minimal amount of technical website development knowledge.

Traditionally, websites could only be built and maintained by website developers adept at languages such as HTML, Javascript, and PHP. Today there are hundreds of different CMS Software options available. Some web firms build their own proprietary or commercially licensed CMS Software. Others use open source software platforms like WordPress and Joomla.

Saltmedia believes in Open Source software. Sometimes this option is overlooked - I’ll save my opinion on closed software for a different blog entry though. In general open source is a software licensing model that allows unrestricted access to use, modify, distribute, and improve software. Why pay to reinvent the wheel (or license it) when you can leverage the community-driven wealth of combined experience of millions of developers around the world?
